Our society is changing. The business world has transformed to a state that we are able to partner with companies that are set on the other side of the world, and we connect and close deals with people we have never even met before. Challenges keep getting harder, and standards become higher. Professionals are expected to be prepared and know how to act and react in every situation.

Furnishing yourself with as much information as possible is a key component of any business. It is not just about being informed, but about the set of skills that will allow people to put that information into use and make it work in order to solve a particular problem. This is why an in-depth education has real value in today´s marketplace.

Not everybody needs a four year college degree to thrive in the business world. Before choosing what and where to study, it is essential to know what you actually need. Younger people may choose an area of study based on what they like and what they think they want to dedicate their lives to. For those that are already working, alternatives to studying are so widely varied in terms of topics, methods and modalities that it is useful to be extremely clear about one’s needs before committing to a particular program.

Training courses

These are the best option when looking to master a certain technique, software or method to do something. Training courses clearly state the skills that you will acquire after completion.

Diploma courses

These are sometimes longer than training courses and are aimed at professionals that need to get a deeper understanding of a particular branch or field.

Seminars and conferences

It is highly recommend to attend business related seminars and conferences, especially when the subjects are of your interest. It is the best way to gain insight about the most recent changes of a particular professional field.

Undergraduate and graduate programs

Great if you have discovered that particular branch or field in which you want to build a career. Getting a degree will certainly improve your chances of personal and professional growth.

When you are applying for a new job, your CV is not the only thing that needs to look professional. You should also have a professional looking application letter, something that will make the reader want to read your CV right away. Following some simple tips will help get your CV into a hiring manager’s hands and not in their rejection pile.

Be enthusiastic, but not overly so

When starting your cover letter, express how much you want to work for the company and explain why you are an ideal candidate. However, try avoid being too enthusiastic. The job may be your dream job, but if you pile on too much enthusiasm, you run the risk of the hiring manager not taking the rest of your letter seriously. For the final paragraph of your letter, close with a little more enthusiasm, a hope they’ll contact you, and your phone number.

Mention the qualifications that make you right for the job

Take a look at some of the qualifications the job vacancy is looking for, and point out in your letter how you have experience in those fields. If you’re starting your career, express how much you have learned from your lessons that would be of use to the company.

Use a professional looking e-mail address

Unless you’re going to work for a comic book store, avoid using e-mail addresses such as “Batman2711@hotmail.com” or “PrincessJenny@yahoo.com”. A simple e-mail address such as “FirstName_LastName@gmail.com” will both look professional and be easy for the hiring manager to remember.

Print your cover letters clearly

Use full black colour printer cartridges, and avoid using silly print fonts. If your cover letter is hard to read because the ink is almost gone or the font type is too hard to read, your letter and CV will be discarded before the hiring manager reads one word of it – so make sure you have everything you need before it is too late.

There are many benefits of returning to University as a mature student. Although the thought of returning to the education system may seem stressful, the number of opportunities and career prospects that open up are as plentiful as they are lucrative.

Career advantages

Most mature students going back to university do so believing that this move will increase their career prospects, and studies indicate that this is true. When you attend university as a mature student, you already have some work experience and are only looking to further improving your skills and consequently job prospects. Studies indicate that people who hold a master’s degree have lower unemployment rates in comparison with those that hold a first degree only.

According to research reports, a person with a master’s degree has a wide range of job prospects, in both the private and public sectors. On the other hand, there is a high demand for skilled and experienced professionals in the business and health care professions, meaning that a mature student going back to university will definitely increase their personal career prospects.

You find that a mature student going for further university education has a firm understanding of what they want in a career, and will go for the kind of training that adds most value to their curriculum vitae or resume. An increased salary reward is also an incentive for mature students going back to university.

Reasons why people choose to study as mature students

There are different reasons why mature students choose to return to university education later in life. One of the reasons is that they want to change their career altogether, and do a job that they enjoy. Others will choose to do so simply for the benefit of academic success, or to learn more about a subject that they love or enjoy.

Another reason is that as a mature student, they are making a personal choice and are motivated to study. Studies indicate that the choice to study is the first step to career success, especially in competitive career fields. The other reason that mature students will choose to go back to school is that they have had enough of partying and they now want to spend more time studying seriously and get the best grades possible.

The open source development curriculum is an online education and training resource which people can use freely, modify and distribute. Open source development is the practice of creating software and products that open up access to a wide range of leaning and educational resources or codes. When you apply open source development to education, the process allows people or users to give feedback as well as additional participation from proficient developers, students, government officials, and all people using the products.

Open source development in relation to learning

Many learning institutions have worked hard to place their services and academic resources on the Internet, which brings the global community to a universal platform and attracts educational investors. This education portal has continued to experience different technical challenges, however, online learning and education via open source development seems to offer a bright future.

Open source and proprietary or closed software are different in many ways, in that there is no restriction in distribution of open source products, which allows continued education for many users. You also get unrestricted distribution of the products, you can modify them to suit your needs and they come with integrity for the source code. You also find that open source is neutral technologically, and developers do not restrict users on the technology they can use.

Digitisation and learning

Educational Digitisation is moderately new to society, but it is transforming the education sector in phenomenal ways, whereby academic institutions and corporations are joining forces and further exploring the potential through virtual universities, educational portals, course ware and online courses.

The internet is currently offering opportunities that combine both economic and educational goals on a common and globally accessible online platform. However, this requires extensive research and technical support for product development, platforms and software infrastructure sustenance on which digital education depends. You find that most learning institutions largely depend on software vendors for support on their virtual learning platforms, which strains their financial resources even further.

The solution to this problem would be open source development software that allows institutions to bring together resources, both technical and financial for the benefit of the whole institution, and the society.

It is often said that when it comes to success, it isn’t what you know, it is who you know. Although this might be oversimplifying things a little, there is no denying that effective networking can significantly improve your chances of furthering your working career. Obviously, a good education and in-depth work experience are the most important things when it comes to being successful in business, but these count for nothing if you don’t know how to get your name out there. Fortunately, in this modern world of Internet technology, networking is much easier than what it used to be.

Social network for job seekers

Regardless of how in-depth your educational background is, the chances are that there is somebody out there who can offer the same in regards to certificates, qualifications and work experience. This is why it is important to know how to present yourself in a way that makes you stand out from the crowd. Social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace allow you to present yourself to the world and connect with billions of people across the globe, some of whom might be in a position to give you your big break in business. Employers often consider social networks as hot spots when it comes to finding new talents, so don’t be afraid to show off your creativity and knowledge when creating a user profile.

Social network for talent seekers

Employers today exploit the extreme usage and popularity of social networks by using them to publicize job opportunities. This not only helps them find the right candidate but also helps in publicizing the company to a greater audience. LinkedIn is a social/professional network that specializes in connecting professionals of all business sectors. This is a vital tool when it comes to networking yourself and you should spend an appropriate amount of time creating your profile to highlight your talents and personality.

However, when using your social network profiles to attract potential employers, be careful; if you regularly update your Facebook page with photos of yourself in nightclubs at 4 a.m., or post status updates that are controversial or un-professional, you might scare away potential suitors.

Cloud computing is a cloud based application that delivers services rather than products. Users share the same platform, which includes information and software provided to computers as well as other computing devices such as smartphones and tablets. It provides an array of services that includes data access, software applications, storage resources and data management.

Characteristics

This computing service has three distinctive characteristics, which make them different from other traditional computing services. The first one is that the service providers sell the service on demand, which can be by the minute or even by the hour, and the end user can use as much of the service as they need. The other cloud computing characteristic is that the service provider manages the service, and all that the consumer or the end user needs is a computer and an Internet connect to access it.

The other notable cloud computing characteristic is that it can be either public or private, with the public service available to all users and the private available only to invited guests.

Service Models

The commonest cloud computing model is “infrastructure as a service” (IaaS), which allows the user to begin, terminate, access, and alter or configure their personal virtual storage and server. In this service the provider will allow the company to pay for as much cloud capacity as they need to use and upload more data to the cloud as often as they need to, which typically resembles the way people consume fuel, electricity, and water.

The second cloud computing service model is “platform as a service” (PaaS), which is a set of product development, and software tools combined that the service provider hosts on their server. PaaS allows users to rent operating systems, hardware network and storage services over the internet, which happens over virtual servers and other services associated with developing running and testing new applications. This allows an application developer to create applications on the provider’s platform, for instance, Google apps.

The last cloud computing service model is “software as a service” (SaaS) in which the provider supplies the end user with hardware infrastructure, which interacts with a software application on a front end portal. This can include inventory control systems web based email, as well as database processing.
